What is Mead? A Beginner’s Guide

What is Mead? Mead is one of the oldest fermented beverages, and has been made for thousands of years. But what exactly is it? Fundamentally, it is a beverage created by fermenting honey and water, and can also include fruits, spices, grains, and hops. The characteristics of a mead can vary based upon honey varietal, additional ingredients, as well as process. While not specific to any region, mead has made an impact on cultures as diverse as the ancient Ethiopians, to the Vikings of Scandinavia; and is prized for its unique flavor.

Traditional meads focus on the specific characteristics of an individual honey varietal, while melomels showcase the distinctiveness of fruits such as black currants and boysenberries. Metheglins are highly aromatic meads that utilize herbs and spices to arouse the senses. When tasting well-crafted meads, one should evaluate the balance between sweetness and acidity, the fidelity of the constituent ingredients, as well as mouthfeel. Whether dry or sweet, still or carbonated, each mead stands as a testament to the artistry of the mead maker.
