What is a Loganberry?

A Loganberry is a cross between a red raspberry and a blackberry. Loganberries look like large, elongated red raspberries, with a slightly deeper berry color.

In the early 1880’s Santa Cruz fruit breeder James Harvey Logan crossed his Aughinbaugh blackberries with Red Antwerp raspberries. Sweet, tart, beautifully colored and delicious, the Loganberry was introduced in Europe in 1897.

These days, loganberries have very little commercial cultivation and can be extremely difficult to source. They are one of the most hard to find berries we use. Loganberries go into our meads Amelia and The Briar, bringing acidity and balance with bright, jammy fruit character.

Our Amelia mead is made with Loganberries, as is our new release The Briar!
