How to Store Open Bottles of Mead

Open mead bottles should be stored and treated like open wine bottles. For short-term storage of open bottles of mead, the quickest and easiest way to store the mead is to return the cork to the bottle and place the bottle in the fridge. Meads will remain fresh and delicious stored this way overnight.

If you are looking for slightly longer-term storage of open bottles of mead, you can use a wine saver pump, such as Vacu Vin. Vacuum wine sealers pump air out of the bottle of wine or mead, creating a vacuum seal. With the use of a pump of this sort, most meads will last refrigerated for a week or more.

For the longest possible storage of mead, we recommend the use of an inert gas. Aragon gas, such as Private Preserve Wine Preserver, will drastically increase the life of your open bottle of mead.

Melomels [fruit meads] generally resist oxidation much better than traditional [honey only] or spiced meads, so you can expect them to last longer once opened. For the storage of carbonated meads, use a carbonated wine stopper.
